PIRATE PRESS

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Welcome to the 2017–18 academic year!
With all of the changes in our profession, it feels like the summer break is shorter and shorter, but we are excited that 363 first-year students and 37 transfers have chosen to join our community this fall. Through our collaboration, Southwestern will welcome engaged learners who are most interested in a strong liberal arts experience. In this class of students, we find scholars, artists, leaders, athletes, scouts, volunteers and a hosts of other talents that will shape our community in amazing ways.
Pirate Press, our quarterly newsletter for counseling colleagues, will feature important updates and insights about Southwestern University. Please note our new SAT policy, which we hope will alleviate stress and minimize financial elements of the college process for your students. Southwestern continues to think of ways to make the admission process student friendly and, hopefully, make the college search process easier for everyone.

As always, if there is a way our team can support students, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to another great year in helping students find the right fit!

Sincerely,
Christine D. Bowman, MEd
Dean of Admission and Enrollment Services
Board Chair, Colleges That Change Lives

NEW STANDARDIZED TESTING POLICY
Starting with the 2017-18 school year, we will not require an official score report for admission and scholarship purposes. We will accept any of the following: a downloaded score from the College Board or ACT websites, a score from a high school transcript, or an official score report. A student will only need to send the official score report once they have committed to Southwestern, if they used a downloaded score report in the admission process.

NEW MINORS
Southwestern will add four new minors in the fall. The new minors all focus on the interdisciplinary nature of our Paideia curriculum by emphasizing connections across disciplines. The new minors are: Health Studies, Data Science, International Studies, and Animal Studies.
